Friendship Fountain has been putting on a show since the 1960s, and it’s still one of the most photographed spots in Jacksonville. By day it’s a wide, breezy stretch of the Southbank Riverwalk — good for a coffee-in-hand wander with the skyline reflecting off the water. By night, the fountain lights up in shifting colours against the Downtown skyline, and the whole walkway takes on a different, more atmospheric mood. It’s an easy, no-plan-needed kind of stop: bring a blanket, grab something from a nearby food truck, and let the kids (or yourself) get a little too close to the spray. The Riverwalk itself stretches for over a mile in each direction, connecting to the Museum of Science & History and on toward San Marco, so it’s a natural add-on to an afternoon exploring the neighbourhood. Best time to go is right around sunset — you get the golden light over the water first, then the fountain lighting kicks in as the sky darkens. It’s free, it’s dog-friendly, and it never feels like a tourist trap despite being one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. A genuinely easy way to feel the pulse of the river that shaped this city.
